Simone Inzaghi leaves Inter Milan just THREE DAYS after Champions League final humiliation – as he accepts offer from Saudi Pro League heavyweights

Simone Inzaghi leaves Inter Milan just THREE DAYS after Champions League final humiliation – as he accepts offer from Saudi Pro League heavyweights

Inter Milan boss Simone Inzaghi has left the club just three days after their humiliation in the Champions League final, it has been announced.

Inzaghi is expected to accept a lucrative offer to take charge of Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal.

The 49-year-old had led Inter to two Champions League finals in three years, but the Italian giants suffered defeats on both occasions.

Inter were blown away by a stunning Paris Saint-Germain performance on Saturday, with the French champions triumphing 5-0 in Munich to win Europe’s elite club competition for the first time.

The result completed an agonising end to the season for Inter, who also missed out on the Serie A title to Napoli by just one point.

Inzaghi has now decided to leave Inter and is expected to sign a three-year deal with Al-Hilal.

‘The time has come for me to say goodbye to this Club after a four-year journey, during which I gave my all,’ Inzaghi said in a statement.

‘Every day I dedicated my first and last thought of the day to Inter. I was reciprocated with professionalism and passion by the players, managers and every single employee of the club.

‘The six trophies won, including the Scudetto della Seconda Stella, together with the path in the UEFA Champions League in 2023 and a few days ago, are tangible evidence of how much my work has been supported by a communion of intent with my staff and with every member of Inter.

‘I thank the shareholders for their trust that has never been lacking, the President and his collaborators for their daily help and dialogue.

‘On a difficult day like today I think it is right to reiterate this sense of gratitude also for the discussion that ended a short while ago. We were sincere and together we decided to conclude this magnificent journey.

‘I want to dedicate a final word to the millions of Nerazzurri fans who cheered me on, cried and suffered in difficult moments and laughed and celebrated in the six triumphs we experienced together.’

Inter president Giuseppe Marotta added ‘On behalf of our shareholder Oaktree and the entire Club, I would like to thank Simone Inzaghi for the work done, for the passion shown and also for the sincerity in today’s discussion, which led to the common decision to separate our paths.

‘Only when we have fought together to achieve success day by day, can we have a frank dialogue like the one that happened today.’

During his time at Inter, Inzaghi had led the club to the Serie A title in 2024, two Coppa Italia victories and three wins in the Italian Super Cup.

Inzaghi’s future had been the source of speculation ahead of the final, amid reports he had received a lucrative offer from Al-Hilal.

The Inter boss had refused to be drawn on his future immediately after the Champions League final defeat.

‘It’s not the right time to talk about the future,’ Inzaghi said in his post-match press conference.

‘We are extremely disappointed and since July of last year we’ve played 58 or 59 games, we got to this final match, so it’s awkward to talk about my future now.

‘Again, we are extremely disappointed. We will be talking about the fact we won no silverware this year but these players deserve great credit because they gave it their very best shot and we suffered a lot of injuries.

‘I wouldn’t change these players for anyone else.’

Inzaghi is now expected to be confirmed as Al-Hilal’s coach by the weekend and would be in place to take charge of their Club World Cup campaign.

His first match in charge would come against Real Madrid, now managed by Xabi Alonso, in the group stage in Miami on June 18.

Al-Hilal also face Mexican side Pachuca and Red Bull Salzburg of Austria in the group.

Inter Milan are also involved in the competition and will meet River Plate, Urawa Red Diamonds and Monterrey in their group.

Inzaghi, who has been Inter Milan manager since July 2021, would be taking his third managerial role.

He previously served as manager of Lazio between 2016 and 2021, where he led the club to a Coppa Italia triumph and two Italian Super Cup victories.

The former striker, who won three caps for Italy, had spent the majority of his playing career at Lazio.

He scored 55 goals in 196 appearances for the club, where he won Serie A in 2000, the UEFA Super Cup in 1999 and three Coppa Italia.
